Get-Rich-Quick Syndrome: FPRO Identifies Societal, Institutional Error, Calls for Intrinsic Reforms
The syndrome had made many great youths to be lazy while pursuing fame and prosperity without work. 6 out of 10 Nigerian youths between ages 12 to 49 now engage in one or two crime such as money ritual, cyber crime, duping and smuggling to get rich quickly. The civil servants are the worst sets of people that lives extravagant life beyond their emoluments, extorting patriotic business citizens during document processing and project executions with government.
All riches without a gradual growth and developmental records or histories would fade off in a tinkle of an hour because every success comes with stories of ups and down which will eventually become a message for next generation emulate.
The Soaring Rate of youths engaging in cyber crime (yahoo-yahoo) is so alarming as primary, secondary and tertiary student says education is a scam, embraces internet scam business to get rich quick.
Who is to be blame?
The society: Professionals who suppose to leave within there means flaunt luxuries to oppress others which led many into criminal activities to get rich quickly to revenge. Parents now back there children in the ritual business and cyber crime. It is only in Nigeria will a 14 year old child close up an hotel for birthday party without a track record of any business and go Scott free.
People working with government lacks good orientation from parent on moral standard and patriotism. It is only in Nigeria that thieves are celebrated in public and good citizens are oppressed and for truthfulness.
Institutional Error: churches that suppose to lift people from pit are the dragging them ocean of corrupt practices as they condemned the ancient path which is the right way. Many fake pastors and Imams whose songs is always prosperity added to hullabaloo. Many religious centres now accolade corruption against probity.
Failed Judiciary System: Criminals are now friends with top lawyers and judges who suppose to convict or arraign criminals to face justice now dine together. It is only in Nigeria criminals walks freely around and innocents are struggling in the prison. This triggers many youths to see criminal act as a way of life.
The entertainment industry are also blamed for producing negative philosophy about riches via there shady movie and music production. Contents mostly promotes, gambling, money ritual (especial Igbo movies), lust and thuggery. As the youth are growing with this contents, they peg their standard at wrong notions.
Reformation
The police force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi,mnipr,mipra, has called on the entire echelon of society to take positive steps towards reforming the Nigerian society from inside out.
Demystifying the role played by all societal parties which entrenches the get-rich-quick mentality in its members, particularly the youths who fall under the Generation Y and Z, he called for an overhaul of the current complacent mindset of sensitive structures in contemporary Nigerian society.
The FPRO made this call on 19th July, 2022, while presenting a paper on "Insecurity and Get-Rich-Quick Syndrome: Implications for the Nigerian Society" at a public lecture held by the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The Public Lecture had in attendance the Chief Host and Provost of the College, Dr. R. A. Soyele and the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Police Command, CP Lanre Bankole, psc, who emphasized the important role of the family, as a microcosm of the country, in tackling the menace of insecurity in the land.
The presentation and its expected positive impact on the audience made up of the creme in Abeokuta, students and staff of the college, members of various unions, religious and traditional groups, lends credence to the fact that the school, beside the family, remains a vital ground for cross fertilisation of equally positive ideas for all-inclusive development in our country.
