NURTW POWER TUSSLE: LAGOS SUSPENDS OPERATION FROM PARKS

By Oluwatosin

The Lagos State Government has been watching closely the events in the National Union of Road Transport Workers Union (NURTW) which go against the purpose of their establish. It has been a normal routine of war amidst these informal populated people over the years which has always been claims and counter claims over the control of the union.

There is a saying that stated that 'If two elephant are fighting, it is the grass that will suffer their menance'. It is the same thing to commuter and transport.

In a statement issued by Gbenga Omotoso, HC, Information & Strategy of Lagos state, The Government has a duty to ensure the safety of lives and property of all Lagosians and visitors. Therefore, there is an urgent need to douse the unnecessary tension generated by the leadership tussle in the NURTW and protect the citizenry from the likely fallout of the situation.

After considering the provisions of the law, the Government hereby suspends the activities of NURTW, which must cease to operate in all parks and garages in Lagos State. The  Government will set up a Committee to immediately take control of the parks and garages. Members of the committee will be key stakeholders in the sector.

The Government’s position is premised on its responsibility to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order in all parks and garages in Lagos State.

Their mischief

The notorious and demeaning indiscipline and rowdiness in the City of Ibadan is a direct result of the unruliness and lawlessness of these people parading themselves as “union people”. They jump into the road, stopping their “members” – taxi drivers and the commercial motorcyclists, Okada” extorting money from them; they often fight for control of the government-built motor parks and taxi-stands, and nobody knows what the forcefully generated money is used for by this organization.

The union is mainly for transporters at the initial stage but now every dick and harry are joining due to free money on the road. These road tax collector realise more income than the official tax collector by government yet have no impact than to destroy valuables and property for the sake of hijacking parks for supremacy.

Judiciary system

If we have a working and perfect judiciary system that tackles issues with probity, the activities of these set of people would have been subdued by law. Our investigation shows that most of these hoodlum calling themselves union are criminals. When they could not operate on the road again they metamorphose to land grabbers terrorizing communities of what they didn't work for.
